Curcumin is derived from the Indian curry spice turmeric. Curcumin is a phytochemical extract composed of a group of powerful compounds, the curcuminoids. The curcuminoids have antioxidant functions while also having the potential to support the natural inflammation response of the body.
Curcuminoids are polyphenols responsible for the bright orange-yellow color of curcumin. Curcuminoids can benefit joints and other tissues by helping to neutralize free radicals.
Curcumin has been shown to have varied actions in the body. It can protect against free radical damage because of its strong antioxidant properties. Curcumin acts as a free radical scavenger, inhibiting oxidative DNA damage. It reduces the tendency of platelets to clump together, which in turn can improve circulation, supporting cardiovascular health. By down-regulating the activity of certain cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, and inhibiting the production of cytokines with inflammatory properties, curcumin is able to support a healthy inflammatory response. It also reduces activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB, which plays an important role in this response. These properties also enable curcumin to support healthy liver function.
This supplement is produced with BCM-95 technology, which enhances the absorption of curcumin in the gut. BCM-95® utilizes Curcuminoids Complex, which is a blend of various curcuminoids and oils of turmeric root. Human clinical studies have shown BCM-95® to be several times better absorbed in the gut and retain its potency in blood longer than most commercially available turmeric 95% Extracts.
