Calcium D-glucarate enhances the body’s natural defenses against environmental toxins and also balances levels of hormones such as estrogen and other steroid hormones in the body. Calcium-d-glucarate favors the activity of glucuronidation, an important system that the body relies upon to deactivate and eliminate toxins and steroid hormones. During glucuronidation, the molecule glucuronic acid is attached to the toxin or steroid hormone. This results in a complex molecule that can be safely excreted in bile or urine. The body also detaches glucuronic acid from these complexes under some circumstances, which would tend to lower overall detoxification in the body. However, calcium-d-glucarate also reduces the enzyme that causes detachment of glucuronic acid, keeping the glucuronic acid-toxin complexes intact so that they can be removed from the body. This helps improve overall detoxification. Taking a calcium-d-glucarate supplement helps to maintain these detoxification processes at healthful levels for those concerned about proper metabolism of environmental toxins or steroid hormones.
